Provides information to all the countries of the Americas and the Caribbean on practical tools that exist on compensation policies, following the experience of Spain and experiences in Asia where these policies did not exist, through four presentations by experts of international standing. The presentations are titled “Compensation policies and the Spanish experience,” “Experience in Asia of compensation due to ASF outbreak,” “Experience of South Africa in compensation due to ASF outbreak,” and “Experience of ASF compensation in the Dominican Republic.”
Dr. Miguel Ángel Higuera: Dr. Higuera has considerable professional experience in the national association of porcine livestock breeders as technical director from 2007 to 2011. From 2004 to 2007 he was part of PROINSERGA, an associative company for pig farming in Spain. From 2006 to 2007 he was technical manager of two genetic material collection centers, from 2004 to 2006 he was technical veterinary manager of the production area, from 2000 to 2004 he also worked for a company specializing in porcine reproduction with semen diluents and frozen semen. From 2001 to 2004 he was in the technical veterinary department for Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Mexico, Bolivia, Venezuela, the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. From 2000 to 2001 he was part of the porcine embryo vitrification project, the synchronization and superovulation and insemination and removal of embryos in sows to then proceed to technical freezing and vitrification. He has also been a spokesman for the porcine sector, developing communication tools, has participated as a speaker at over 200 congresses, and has over 100 articles in scientific journals. He is currently chair of the National Association of Spanish Pig Farmers.
Dr. Wayne Johnson: From 1980 to the present he has been in the pig farmer advisory service. From 2012 to 2019 he lectured in porcine diseases at Progressus Agriculture-School. In 2002 he provided consultancy for Ag Tech and was on the executive veterinary program for pigs of the University of Illinois. He has also been a licensed veterinarian in the State of Illinois. From 1978 to 2005 he was a member of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians, rejoining in 2016. He has had experiences in information technologies for production animals. He was also a foreign visiting expert of the Agricultural University of China from 1996 to 1999, and also as a visiting foreign expert in the Guangdong Porcine Industry Association from March 1999 to February 2001. He has received awards such as the China Porcine Welfare Association Service Award and as one of“The Ten Leading Innovators of China” from the Chinese Animal and Veterinary Production Association in 2017.
Dr. Mary-Lou Penrith: Born and raised in South Africa, Dr. Penrith has over twenty-five years of zoological and epidemiological research and has received doctorates in both fields. She graduated as veterinarian in 1991 and joined the pathology section of the Institute of the University of Pretoria. She developed a particular interest in pig diseases and soon got involved in African Swine Fever (ASF). She had the privilege of holding consultations for the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in nine countries of East and West Africa on ASF epidemiology and control, and similar missions in Georgia and Armenia. These consultations covered a period of twenty years, four of whichshe spent as a laboratory management consultant in Mozambique. There she coordinated aDANIDA-funded project to improve pig production and health for small farmers in Mozambique. She was also consultant in a previous project in Mozambique and Tanzania. At present she is extraordinary professor in the Department of Tropical Veterinarian Diseases in the University of Pretoria, where she supervises and teaches postgraduate students and continues to be involved as ASF expert with the FAO and OIE. Her passion is to help small farmers with ASF.
Dr. Fredy Ramón Fernández Acosta: Fernández Acosta holds a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Political Sciences. He holds a Master’s in Business Administration, a Master’s in Globalization and International Business and a doctorate in Organizational Leadership. In addition to this, from 2002 to 2004 he was in the Universidad Católica Tecnológica del Cibao (UCATECI), La Vega, Dominican Republic, where he was a professor in business administration, and lecturer in subjects such as Administration I and Administration II in the administration program for adults. He also participated in history of political ideas, introduction to administration. From 2015 to 2017 and from 2017 to 2018 he was a professor at the Universidad Católica Tecnológica del Cibao (UCATECI), La Vega, Dominican Republic, and a lecturer at the Universidad Dominicana O&M Moca campus and is political consultant to Carolina Mejía.
