Dr. Vizcaíno offers an overall perspective on African Swine Fever (ASF), and discusses issues such as the prevention of the disease, clinical signs that suggest it, and actions to be implemented by veterinary services, farmers and all relevant sectors involved.
Dr. José Manuel Sánchez Vizcaíno: Did his degree and doctorate at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, later doing postgraduate studies in animal immunology and virology at Cornell University in New York. On his return to Spain he joined the National Institute of Agricultural and Food Research (INIA), in the following roles: Researcher (1978-1980), Head of Research Projects (1980-1985), Head of Animal Virology Department (1985-1988), Director of Animal Health Department (1988-1993) and Director of Animal Health Research Center (CISA) (1993-2002).
Since 2002 he is a Professor in Animal Health at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, doing teaching and research work in the Department of Animal Health of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, as well as director of the reference laboratory of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) for African Swine Fever and African Horse Sickness.
He has over 200 scientific publications in journals of great international importance, and is the author of various chapters of international renowned books. He has directed a great number of national and international research projects and thirty-two doctoral theses on infectious animal diseases. He has participated in seventy R&D contracts, in various patents, and has contributed to over 500 congresses, conferences, courses and interviews (TV, radio, newspapers, video, web) all over the world.
He received the national porcine research prize ANAPORC 1990, International Porcine Prize Porco Bravo 1999, first prize in porcine health and production (Animal Product 2000), Animal Health Prize 2007 “The Best of La Verdad 2007” and Albéitar Awards 2012 in the Scientific Category, in recognition of his contribution to the scientific development of research in veterinary science.
He has received the Medal of Merit of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) in international recognition of his exceptional services to veterinary science (24/05/09) and has been invested Doctor Honoris Causaby the Universidad de Murcia (22/04/10), and was named 2013 George C. Poppensiek Visiting Professor in Global Animal Health by Cornell University (09/2019).
Professor Sánchez Vizcaíno has been collaborating since 1990 with the OIE and the FAO in various health missions for the control of infectious diseases and technology transfer in various countries of Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa. He has participated in a great number of national and international scientific commissions.
